A number of schools registered for the new disciplines, with Beach Volleyball played on sand by pairs, while Lacrosse is a stick-and-ball game that involves passing, catching and shooting into an opponent’s goa.

The sport brought a fast-paced physical edge to the competition.

Cricket and Dance Sport are expected to light up the coming days.

Beach Volleyball

Kenyan teams endured a rough baptism in the sport as Ugandan schools stamped early authority on Sunday, August 17.

Hilton High School Mukono defeated Lang’ata High School 2-1 before sweeping A.C. Butonge 2-0.

Bukedea Comprehensive added to Kenya’s woes with a 2-0 victory over Butonge.

Rushoroza High School had mixed fortunes, beating hosts Kakamega High 2-0 before falling 2-1 to Lang’ata Boys.

Burundi’s Lycee Tech also impressed, dispatching Tanzania’s Tumbi S.S. 2-0.

In the girls’ category, Kenya’s Mwambeyo High School managed a 2-0 win over compatriots Kameji High, but Bukedea Comprehensive fell 2-0 to Seroma Christian High School of Uganda.

Lacrosse

At Kakamega High School grounds, the newly-introduced Lacrosse turned into a Uganda-versus-Kenya affair, with Ugandan schools dominating the opening matches.

In the boys’ contests, Bombo Army SS overpowered Musingu High 11-6, while Empower International Academy humiliated Mumias Muslim 14-1, adding to their earlier 9-3 win over St Peter’s Mumias.

St Peter’s College Tororo scraped a narrow 9-8 victory against St Joseph’s Boys Kitale.

The girls’ competition was equally fierce.

Uganda’s Nabisunsa Girls eased past Kenya’s Reuben SS 11-4 after a 15-7 win over Moi Girls Eldoret.

However, not all went Uganda’s way as Bombo Army SS fell 10-7 to St Charles Kalaba, while Muzza High lost 16-12 to St Joseph’s Girls Kitale.

Uganda Lacrosse Association official Liberty Twesime hailed the inclusion of the sport at school level.

“I am extremely overwhelmed seeing Lacrosse played at the FEASSSA Games.

This is steady progress and there are better times ahead. We are reaching out to Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi to join, alongside more schools from Uganda and Kenya.”

Cricket matches and Dance Sport competitions are set to roll out later this week, as organizers seek to expand the diversity of disciplines on offer and give more students a platform to showcase their talents.
